Eco-Products and DNO produce introduce biobased compostable packaging for K-12 schools in the US
Eco-Products and DNO Produce have launched a new compostable cup and lid for K-12 school nutrition programs, emphasizing sustainability through biobased materials. This packaging features a 4-ounce molded fiber cup made from renewable resources. It is sealed with a plant-based lidding film that holds fresh-cut fruits and vegetables.
DNO Produce, based in Columbus, Ohio, distributes fresh-cut and bulk produce to schools in 17 states. The company aims to enhance its packaging using materials derived from renewable sources. This reinforces its commitment to sustainability while providing nutritious options for students.
Due to staffing shortages, many school districts now need individually packaged and pre-portioned foods. DNO’s prepared produce simplifies meals for schools by eliminating sorting, washing, and cutting.
Alex DiNovo, President of DNO, stated the transition to sustainable packaging supports their sustainability goals. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for individually packaged items, highlighting the need for environmentally responsible choices.
Wendell Simonson, Director of Marketing at Eco-Products, praised the partnership. He noted that this biobased cup and lid solution can transform school food services.
The molded fiber cup is BPI-Certified compostable. The plant-based lidding film meets ASTM Standards for compostability. This new development helps schools reduce their environmental footprint and promotes the use of renewable resources.
